He does have sex with her, however, it's not really rape. Jamal's mother is one of the victims. He affectively reveals the impact of the moral and spiritual consequences of poverty and the recognisable case system and social environments on individual health. It is worth driving an hour to the nearest big city and going to an art-house theater, trust me. I think that is the major issue raised while watching this movie. At first he seems like a savior, providing them food to eat, shelter, a place to sleep, and other kids to learn and play with. Maman was training Salim to be a killer—and unfortunately for the gangster, he was successful. Salim convinced Latika to have sex with him the night they were rescued to, at least according to him, take away one of her valuable assets. Jamal goes near Latika and confesses his love for her. Salim is able to escape with Jamal, but Latika is left behind.
At the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to Salim and Jamal as young boys living with their mother in the Indian Slum of Bombay, characterised by a high population of low income settlers and poor living conditions. She is freezing, and Jamal feels sorry for her. One of their old friends told Jamal that Latika now lived in the 'cages' - the red light area. What does she say finally? In the movie, Jamal and Salim referred to themselves as Athos and Porthos, but they never learned the name of the third musketeer, although Jamal thought of Latika as the third. Jamal is appalled, but Salim claimed it was Latika who let go and that she is strong and can fend for herself.
Why wasn't Latika with them? Salim, always the hard case, doesn't want anything to do with her, and would let her freeze or drown. What Latika says in return is the last spoken sentence by any character of the film before the closing credits. Unfortunately Salim, drunk, and clearly destroyed from having killed for the first time, kicks Jamal out of the room and makes it clear that because he saved their lives and saved Latika from prostitution he deserved her virginity. Who invited Latika to sleep in the container? In fact, the movie did not even make my list of Top Ten Favorite Movies of 2008.
