Interestingly enough, history books forget to tell us that slaves were also kept in Northern states too and that slaves were not only black, but Indian ,too. They wanted to expand slavery. They did this by helping return escaped slaves, electing the officials they elected, and trying to keep the issue of slavery out of politics. In that case the American Civil war would turn into an international war. After the Revolution, a few northern states started to make slavery illegal.
